Mind:Body

For the longest time I have had a fascination with the mind:body connection and I have come to the conclusion that we don’t pay enough attention. 
Especially not to our bodies. Or pain. 
We ignore it. 
We’ve grown up in a society where the catch cry is “she’ll be right mate” and ignoring niggles that end up as injures or sickness. Sometime major ones. 
What if I told you that ignoring the niggle was like ignoring a 4 year old child. Or a trusted friend. 
Well, pretty much that is what you are doing. 
It (your unconscious mind = UCM) is trying to tell you something!! 

Ignoring the signals from the body causes strain. It takes effort to stop your awareness going where it wants to. We have all been taught to distrust the body, to fear pain. Pain is not our enemy. Though we do tend to jump to conclusions about what it means. As a result  we are overdependent on our medical system, doctors and drugs. 
Our bodies are wonderful instruments; they are able to synthesize ALL of the drugs that we are prescribed or buy over the counter, blind trials and other stories such as the Case of Mr Wright have proven that. (http://www.tacticalgamer.com/sandbox/6852-case-mr-wright.html) 
So why do we choose to ignore our own power to heal? Why are we not listening to our aches, pains and niggles? 

If you could just stop for a moment or two and pay attention. Breathe. Become aware and just notice where your UCM takes you. What is the message it is trying to tell you? Allow yourself to notice the pain/discomfort. Imagine it is an old trusted friend trying to tell you something important, and just by paying attention you start the healing process. 

The more you stop and listen, the better you get at it to the point where you notice subtle shifts in your body and are able to address them before they become something more serious.

Letting Go

Have you ever fought hard to stay in a place? 

A place that wasn’t a good fit for your skills and abilities? 
A place that really didn’t make your heart sing? 
A place that didn’t really value your contribution? 

In 2007 I was fighting to stay in a role on site in one of the largest companies in NZ. The funny thing was, being there was killing me. SLOWLY! 
I’d had so much on my plate as an HR Professional, that on the weekends I would wake-up and feel like I had been hit by a bus. 
I was exhausted. 
I had a car accident. 
Then I was put off on 2 weeks stress leave - but only because one of my team cared enough to have a conversation with my manager. 
When I came back from leave, I was hauled into a performance management situation. I felt sick. And certainly not something I needed to experience on top of everything else that had been going on. 

I fought hard to stay in my role. I felt I had to prove my credibility, clear my name. 
Well, so I thought anyway. 

I rememeber the exact moment I decided to let go. I was driving. (No, I didn’t let go of the wheel!!) 
Why was I fighting to stay in a role and in a place that I hated and where I wasn’t valued? 
What if I just let go? 
So I did. 
I moved into a similar role in another team. A team where I was valued. A team where I could use all my skills and abilities. A team where I could make a difference. 

That was the start of a long line of events that has led me here to my own business. Doing what I love. Making a difference. 

So what are you holding on to? Where are you fighting to stay? 
Can you let go…? 

‘Cause what I have found, is that sometimes when it feels counter-intuitive to do so. You must let go.
