"Read me a story…"

How many times did you say that at bedtime? When I was growing up stories at bedtime were a nightly ritual. We didn't have a colour TV so our serial drama's came in the guise of story book chapters, imaginary worlds and of course the heroes and villains. I wanted to live in magical worlds, travel to the land of the BFG's, and oh how I wished I could fight with a sword!

As I got older and could read for myself, I would stay up late reading under the covers with a torch. Even now, I will stay up 'til 1,2 or 3am long past my ability to focus properly on the words, just to finish a story. Just one more chapter...

What is it about stories that make them so captivating? Their ability to imprint on our memory so even years later we can remember the detail even though we may not have read the book for years? I bet even now you can remember 'Little Red Riding Hood' or 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Stories play an important part in the history of the world, before we could talk humans told stories using pictures on cave walls. Stories trigger our emotion centres and remain with us, story has life, facts are lifeless; Stories help people 'see', facts are flat, inert. Story induces an altered state of awareness, not unlike a hypnotic trance, they lower our blood pressure and slow the heart rate. They move people to a very young state of awareness, one that is less analytical, more receptive and better connected to their imagination and the storyteller's message. So why wouldn't you communicate your message in a story format? Tell your story in a way that captures the imagination of your audience, connect with them, move them.
